What If You’re Already There?

Have you ever bought a new car?

For the first few weeks, you notice everything.

The smell.

The way the door closes.

The dashboard.

You park a little farther away so nobody dings it.

You might even look back at it when you're walking into a store.

And then something happens.

Three months later...

it's just your car.

Nothing happened to it.

The car didn't change.

You did.

The newness wore off.

And I wonder how often we do that with our lives.

We convince ourselves that happiness is waiting for us somewhere just ahead.

When I get the promotion.

When I make more money.

When I lose the weight.

When the kids are settled.

When I buy the house.

When I sell the house.

When I get the car.

When I retire.

When I finally get to wherever there is.

It's as though the life we really want is waiting at some proverbial train station down the tracks.

So we keep traveling.

Keep striving.

Keep waiting.

And sometimes...

we miss the station we're standing in.

Maybe the life you've been chasing isn't on the other side of something.

Maybe some of it is sitting right in front of you.

Today.

The person across the breakfast table.

The dog waiting at the door.

The friend who still answers your call.

The ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

The house that isn't perfect.

The body that still carries you.

The people you love who are still here.

Maybe the next move isn't always about getting somewhere else.

Maybe sometimes it's about seeing differently.

There's a thought I've been trying to embrace lately:

I don't mind what happens.

Not because I don't care.

I care deeply.

It's not surrendering ambition.

It's not becoming passive.

And it's certainly not giving up.

It's releasing the belief that life has to unfold exactly the way I planned for me to be okay.

I don't mind what happens.

I'll show up.

I'll work.

I'll love.

I'll fight for what matters.

I'll dream big.

I'll make plans.

But I don't have to wrestle every moment of life into the shape I think it should take.

There is an incredible peace in that.

Because maybe peace isn't finally getting everything we want.

Maybe peace is no longer requiring everything to be different before we allow ourselves to be happy.

But here's the other side of it.

Sometimes that quiet honesty tells us something else.

Sometimes you look around and realize:

It is time.

Time for a different house.

A different town.

A different job.

A different rhythm.

A smaller life on paper...

but a much bigger life in reality.

Sometimes a change of atmosphere really can awaken something inside us.

New streets.

New neighbors.

New routines.

New mornings.

New beginnings.

There's nothing wrong with wanting that either.

The difference is knowing what you're actually looking for.

Are you running toward something?

Or running away from yourself?

Are you expecting the next house, car, job or destination to create something inside you that only you can create?

Or have you genuinely outgrown where you are?

Those are uncomfortable questions.

But perhaps that's where Life's Next Move really begins.

Not with a For Sale sign.

Not with Zillow.

Not with a moving truck.

With honesty.

Maybe you need to move.

Maybe you need to stay.

Maybe you need something entirely new.

Or maybe you need to wake up tomorrow morning, pour a cup of coffee, look around at this beautifully imperfect life you've already built and realize:

This is it.

This is not the waiting room.

This is not rehearsal.

This isn't the part we hurry through until the good part begins.

This is your life.

Today.

Right here.

Right now.

Don't miss it looking for the next thing.

And if, after appreciating everything in front of you, something inside you still says...

It's time.

Then listen.

Maybe that's life's next move.
